Activity Map is a map with four zones on which students reveal their attitudes towards specific activities. The group version involves marking the zones on the floor. Everyone quickly discovers the range of attitudes towards each activity, and whether or not this is based on experience of the activity.

Storyline is a chart made by participants showing their 'ups and downs' over a period of time. The chart can serve as a personal record of their 'journey' through a course of study or during a new challenge at work, or while persevering with learning a skill.

The purpose of Goal Keepers is to accelerate the process of learning by doing. This is achieved by integrating feedback and review into the activity - instead of having to wait for the post-activity review – when the opportunity for timely feedback has passed by. In this exercise pairs pay special attention to each other's goals (objectives) and so become their partner's "goal keeper".

Horseshoe is a scaling exercise in which participants show where they stand on an issue by where they (physically) stand on a curved spectrum. Horseshoe kick starts group discussion by making each person's point of view visible and (optionally) by giving everyone preparation time by first speaking with a 'friendly neighbour'.

Back to the Future is an exercise that focuses on helpful factors in the past and present that are real and available for achieving an important goal. Missing Person is a task in which a team creates an imaginary person who will help the team overcome its limitations and bring about improved team performance. This concept is widely used by startups who want to test small innovations on their products. Some innovations will be very well received by the public and others will not receive the expected success; it may even turn out that an innovation is a total failure.

On a product, this results in incremental development (small batch development). Testing in small batches delivered helps to limit the consequences of a possible failure.

The agility and its operation of writing user stories in an incremental and iterative way makes it very easy to implement this fail fast concept.

WHAT IS FAIL FAST?

Have your dreams of a good night's rest been reduced to wishful thinking? According to the National Sleep Foundation, 40% of Americans get less than seven hours of shut-eye a night on weekdays. More than 60% suffer from insomnia several nights a week. When you stumble through your days groggy and sleep-deprived, you thwart more than your productivity. Studies show there’s a strong connection between your snooze time and your waistline.

Anxieties and fears of the day ahead make it difficult for many adults to get a full night’s sleep. Some struggle to drift off; others wake up in the middle of the rapid-eye-movement (REM) cycle. The REM cycle is the deepest sleep cycle and the time when you dream. Awakening during it leaves nagging issues that might have otherwise been resolved through dreaming. Studies show dreams become more positive as the night wears on, but waking up repeatedly during REM sleep interrupts the process. It’s no wonder sleep-deprived people are so irritable: They miss out on the most therapeutic part of the sleep cycle!

Researchers have found a link between the nation’s growing sleep-deprivation problem and its bulging waistlines. Inadequate sleep promotes overeating and weight gain. Lack of quality sleep could also affect hormone balance, behavior, and mental function in both adults and children, making us more prone to pack on the pounds.

Sleep habits have changed dramatically from those of the previous generation. According to the poll, about one-third of adults go to bed after midnight during the workweek. Often these same people are out of bed by six in the morning. And Americans aren’t the only ones losing zzzs: Sleep deprivation is much more common among all industrialized societies today than it was two decades ago.

Changing sleep patterns have created new opportunities for food manufacturers to tempt you with tasty late-night treats. Many fast-food franchises have extended their drive-thru hours in recent years to cater to the insomniac crowd. A double cheeseburger or combo burrito might hit the spot at 12:30 a.m., but odds are you’ll regret it when you see the bathroom scale in the morning. Midnight snacks aren’t the only diet saboteur. Sleep-deprived people desperate for a morning energy boost often grab quick-fix breakfast foods like sugar-loaded cereals and grease-laden fast-food items.

Mealtimes Blur with Altered Sleep Patterns

Traditional meal schedules have morphed into an around-the-clock snacking carnival for many of us. Some of this stems from the misconception that when you’re exhausted any food will perk you up. In truth, a 15-minute nap can recharge your batteries more efficiently than a cookie or latté break. If you risk being fired if you snooze at your desk, consider reclining in your car for 15 minutes and then heading back into work. Is it any wonder your pants feel snug after you’ve spent the day dropping by the office candy bowl to stay awake? Using food to combat sleep deprivation makes you more sluggish – not less – especially if you binge on sugary or fattening fare.

Out of desperation, many people turn to pills for a restful sleep. Among the most popular: melatonin supplements, which manufacturers claim ease jet lag and provide a natural alternative to powerful prescription drugs like Ambien and Provigil. Melatonin is a hormone produced from the amino acid tryptophan, abundant in foods like turkey. Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest just before bedtime, a fact that leads scientists to suspect it plays a role in the body’s natural circadian rhythms, which influence feelings of sleepiness and wakefulness. But try a new fluffy pillow before you buy a supplement. The bottom line about melatonin: A recent review of 15 clinical studies published in the British Medical Journal showed no evidence that melatonin is effective in treating insomnia or jet lag.

A good night’s sleep is essential for optimum brain function. Medical experts advise avoiding caffeine in the late afternoon, going to bed at the same time every night, and developing sleep rituals, like taking a hot bath or reading a book before bed, to help curb insomnia. But is organic food really that much better for you? Should we really do more than just rinse off our fruits and veggies before taking a bite? Find out if choosing organic foods for you and your family is more beneficial to your health-wise as well as beneficial to the environment and to your checkbook. 

To be truly organic, the United States Department of Agriculture has regulated that food must be 95% organic, excluding water and salt content. This means that it can’t be produced with unnatural fertilizers, pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, and irradiation. Organic food is also not genetically modified, meaning there’s no other genetic material from other animals or plants inserted into them. Organic is not to be confused with foods labeled “natural,” because natural usually means that’s it’s been minimally processed and is preservative-free. If the food is at least 70% organic, the label will read “Made with organic ingredients.” The superiority of organic food over conventional food both nutritionally and environmentally is a hotly debated topic, with no conclusive evidence. Here are the hottest points of both arguments, highlighting the debate between whether or not we should trade in our traditionally-grown and produced foods for organic foods.

Here's a fun little educational food experiment: Hold a single pomegranate seed up to the light. Look closely. See anything? Look closer, and you’ll see why these fruits are affectionately known as the “jewels of winter.” Ruby red in color, and bursting with a tart, sweet juice, pomegranates make their debut in most produce aisles nationwide by October and are available on the market just until December. The limited availability of pomegranates makes the upcoming season that much sweeter and more vital to savor.

Hailing from the Punicaceae family, pomegranates are roughly the size of a large orange, although red in color. Their name comes from the French words “pomme,” meaning apple and “grenate,” meaning many-seeded. Break open a pomegranate fruit and you’ll find hundreds of seeds individually held within a ruby red pulp and sac. Each seed is anchored to a bitter-tasting, cream-colored pith (membrane) that should be discarded. Three main types of pomegranates exist, two of which are sweet in flavor, and one that is very sour. Of these types, there are a number of varieties, some that bear only flowers (non-fruiting), some dwarf varieties used as decorative container plants, and the familiar fruiting varieties we love to eat. One of the most common edible varieties is called the Wonderful, which it certainly is.

Eating a pomegranate can take quite a long time, since removing the hundreds of seeds from the membrane is a laborious, and usually messy job. But as any pomegranate enthusiast will tell you, it’s worth the time and effort. Pomegranates should feel heavy for their size, indicating that each seed-encasing is bursting with juice. Feel the crown of the fruit, which, if the fruit is ripe, should be slightly soft. The skin of the pomegranate should be taut and shiny without any blemishes, cracks, or splitting. Whole pomegranates can be stored in a dark, cool area for up to one month, or in the refrigerator for up to two months. However, pomegranate seeds will only store for about three days in the refrigerator. To remove the seeds from your pomegranate, you can either choose to get down and dirty with it, breaking apart the fruit with your hands and removing seeds while you eat (which will leave you with ruby-red stained fingers, and possibly clothes). For a less messy way to remove the seeds, break apart the fruit and place in a bowl of water. Keeping your hands in the water, separate the seeds from the membrane, which will float to the top of your bowl while the seeds will sink to the bottom. <p>Here is what each of the notes in a ROTI corresponds to:</p>
<p>1) <strong>useless</strong>: I wasted my time coming here</p>
<p>2) <strong>useful</strong>: the meeting was useful but I still lost some time by being present.</p>
<p>3) <strong>Just average</strong>: I didn't waste my time but I didn't find a real interest in coming.</p>
<p>4) <strong>Good</strong>: it was not bad, I didn't come to waste my time by coming to the contrary</p>
<p>5) <strong>Excellent</strong>; it was a great moment and I would have clearly regretted not having participated.</p>

<p><strong>Let's ask them why</strong></p>
<p>We will interview those who gave a score of 1 or 2 during this ROTI session to find out why they did not like the meeting. It is important to have feedback to improve future meetings.</p>
<p>If all participants put notes 1 and 2 during this ROTI session, I strongly advise you to review the format of your meetings and not to hesitate to take feedback from each participant.</p>
