“What we judge in another is a disowned part of ourselves.”

Once upon a time, I used to get really depressed around people whom I didn’t live up to their “full potential”. I referred to these people as “sleepwalkers”, due to their inability to wake up and smell the law of attraction.

I assumed that my depression was a direct result of the other person’s choices, and so I did everything I could to inspire them to change. But what I didn’t realize at the time was that my negative feelings had nothing to do with their decisions, and everything to do with my judgment of them.

Take a moment and notice that when you can’t accept people as they are in the moment, you feel irritated. This irritation is a signal from your intuition, letting you know that you are resisting the conditions of the present moment and pushing against WHAT IS. When you refuse to accept people as they are, you create a disturbance in the Force!

One of the hardest spiritual truths to accept is that everyone is as they should be. If you think otherwise, you are rejecting the inherent wisdom of the Universe, the same wisdom that is shining through the eyes of the person you want to change.

When you can’t accept a person as they are, it’s usually because they are reflecting a quality you haven’t yet accepted in yourself – otherwise known as the Shadow Effect. But if you are conscious enough, you can use the interaction as a mirror into your own psyche.

Are you aware of the qualities within yourself you have rejected? Examine the characteristics of the most difficult people in your life and see if they’re reflecting these qualities back to you.

As for me, I find the “unconsciousness” in myself totally revolting. I hate it when I think, speak, or act unconsciously. The “sleepwalkers” are just reminding me to have more love and compassion when the unconscious part of my personality shows up.

When we take the time to love and accept even our most unwanted qualities fully, we can do the same with other people. When we love people unconditionally we have no need to change them, and our resistance to the present moment dissolves.

Accepting people as they are doesn’t mean we will stop judging altogether. Our judgments do serve a purpose because they help us sort through the contrast of this world and decide what we want out of life. But just because someone decides to be a vegan, intuitive, tea-lovin’ yogi doesn’t mean everyone else in the world should be.

The purpose of heart-based goals is not to enable you to “get ahead” on a physical level, but to encourage you to evolve on a personal level.

Recently I was talking to a friend who confessed to me that doesn’t like his job. He admitted that the reason he continues to work in his current profession is that he loves the money and the reassurance of a huge pension. He also expressed some concern about the possibility that thinking in this way makes him a shallow person.

I know that many people are in the same situation. The root of this problem is the myriad of unhealthy, unconscious beliefs “running the program” of our minds; beliefs that we have come to accept through societal conditioning. My friend’s beliefs about his work life are a prime example of some of the many “viruses” in the mind of humanity that I’d like to uncover in this article.

The virus of the Mind # 1 – “I am a consumer, not a creator.”

My friend thinks that the sole purpose of his job is to make money, which is a common and destructive belief in our society. Somewhere along the line we all unconsciously agreed that the purpose of our work life was to enable us to go out and “buy stuff”. I’m not discounting the fact that we need money to survive, but I’ve witnessed over and over again how the Universe fully supports individuals with ease when they make an effort to switch off the “consumer” program and switch on the “creator” program. This happens when you decide that the purpose of your work life is not to enable you to consume goods, but instead, to create something of value by utilizing the unique gifts and talents you were born with to fulfill a purpose. Ironically, a creator effortlessly provides a supportive and secure living environment for themselves and for their families because they have shifted their focus from consumerism to creationism. In doing so they have unknowingly taken on the vibrational frequency of giving instead of getting, which opens the door to abundance. To make a long story short, we always receive more of what we give out.

The virus of the Mind # 2 – “I can have either this OR that (but not both).”

Another miscalculation in my friend’s judgment is his unconscious decision that it isn’t possible to have a job he enjoys and earn loads of money and have lots of dough left over for a great retirement. The result of this ingrained pattern of either-or thinking is extreme self-limitation, mediocrity, and doubt.

I have an alternate view: you can easily have your cake and eat it too; just bake more cake. Knowing you have the unlimited, exquisite ingredients of the infinite Universe at your disposal (unlimited “dough”), why would you go bake your cake with that 10-year-old generic cake mix in the back of your cupboard? The Universe’s recipe is simple: decide what you want, and then focus upon it.

The virus of the Mind # 3 – “I will be happy/satisfied/fulfilled at some point in the future.”

The third mind virus is a common one; it’s called “living for a future that never comes”. By postponing happiness until his retirement, my friend is destined for a life of misery. I’ll never forget a TV show I watched about a man who worked at a factory job he hated for his entire life, with the sole purpose of enjoying a comfortable retirement. By the time he retired, he was experiencing an immeasurable number of health problems that made enjoying his daily life unbearable (probably because the vibration of his negativity eventually manifested in his physical body). To make matters worse, the year after he retired his company went bankrupt and was unable to pay for his pension, his medication, or any of his healthcare benefits.

My friends, I would like to emphasize to you that your life is in session NOW. Not next week, not next year, not in twenty-five years, but NOW. If you don’t find a way to be happy now, you will never be happy. The truth is that happiness comes first, and then the good stuff unfolds in your life as a result of it. Your outer life is just a projection of your inner life; not the other way around (it’s not you, it’s me!). Therefore if you think your unhappiness is a result of your work life, you only have two choices: get a job you like, or like the job you’ve got.

The virus of the Mind # 4 – “Money is shallow.”

My friend equates wanting money with being shallow. I would like to assert to my friend and to each and every one of you that money is not shallow, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with desiring loads of it. Personally, I love money – bring it on! Yearning for abundance is a naturally encoded desire within you because you know that it is your birthright to be wealthy. Money enables you to lovingly support yourself, to create a comfortable living environment that helps you fulfill your life purpose, to widen your perspective via travel, and to be giving to others, among many, many other things.

The danger with money arises when it becomes your means to an end. If you are only working for money, you’re not living life to the fullest because chances are you are not fulfilled by your job. You’re not living up to your highest purpose because you’re not thinking like a creator. Money comes naturally when you feel wealthy, and you’ll only feel genuinely wealthy when you begin to give the gift of yourself.

It’s also important to remember that YOU are not your money, your job, your possessions, or your status. In reality, you are a soul expressing itself in human form.

Fortunately, there is an easy antidote to the viruses in your head, which is to program your mind to think the opposite of the limiting beliefs you’re currently holding. I’ll give you a head start by giving you a few morning affirmations:

- money is my ally and I am worthy of wealth!

My homework for you is to Post-it Note these affirmations to your bathroom mirror and say them to yourself morning and night for two minutes while brushing your teeth.

The virus of the mind

I was peacefully eating my dinner this evening when I was jolted out of my seat by a maelstrom of snarling and barking coming from the front hallway. Startled, I jumped up and ran to the hall to investigate the cause of all the commotion.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the source of the canine chaos. My new greyhound Monty was standing stiffly in the foyer with raised lips that revealed his pearly white teeth. He was aggressively snarling at the “other greyhound” in the hallway mirror, who growled back in unison.

Being a newly retired race dog, Monty is unfamiliar with all household objects including mirrors and has no idea that the dog he is barking at is himself. In fact right this very second, he has re-discovered his reflection and continues to bark at himself hysterically. I’m encouraging him to continue in hopes that he’ll eventually “bark” it out of his system.

Monty’s reaction to his reflection is a great metaphor for how most of us deal with our lives. Each circumstance in our external reality is a mirror for our inner thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. The problem is that when we are unaware of this, we “bark at ourselves” by blaming the external circumstances for our problems. 

We declare ourselves victims and perpetuate the hamster wheel of discontent by reacting negatively to our creations. In fact, each and every time we react (rather than respond) to a situation, we are barking in a mirror, just like Monty.

If you catch yourself barking in the mirror of life because you don’t like what you see, there is only one way to alter it, which is by changing the source of the reflection (YOU). Most people attempt to re-configure their reflection via external action – they move across the country, look for a new job, acquire a new relationship, shop for new clothes, or get plastic surgery. Many people don’t realize that genuine and lasting transformation has nothing to do with re-arranging Life on an external level.

The quickest way to change your reflection is by learning to truly love and appreciate yourself. Whether you are conscious of the power of your mind or not, the mirror of life is directly related to your self-esteem. It’s not possible to create suffering in your life if you genuinely respect and honor yourself. Even people who are not aware that their thoughts create their reality can and do create truly incredible lives when they love and acknowledge themselves.

Until you learn how to love yourself, you are destined to be discontent with the reflection that is your external reality. Unfortunately, you’re not alone in this form of unhappiness. Although most of us can’t really give a good reason for why we’re all so undeserving or unworthy, most of humanity suffers from self-hatred from one degree to another. The only remedy is to become aware of who you truly are, and why you’re on the planet. When you remember the deeper reality that is your true essence, you will grow to love yourself with ease and grace. You’ll also give up barking at the mirror.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the source of the canine chaos. My new greyhound Monty was standing stiffly in the foyer with raised lips that revealed his pearly white teeth. He was aggressively snarling at the “other greyhound” in the hallway mirror, who growled back in unison.
 
Being a newly retired race dog, Monty is unfamiliar with all household objects including mirrors and has no idea that the dog he is barking at is himself. In fact right this very second, he has re-discovered his reflection and continues to bark at himself hysterically. I’m encouraging him to continue in hopes that he’ll eventually “bark” it out of his system.
 
Monty’s reaction to his reflection is a great metaphor for how most of us deal with our lives. Each circumstance in our external reality is a mirror for our inner thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. The problem is that when we are unaware of this, we “bark at ourselves” by blaming the external circumstances for our problems.&nbsp;
 
We declare ourselves victims and perpetuate the hamster wheel of discontent by reacting negatively to our creations. In fact, each and every time we react (rather than respond) to a situation, we are barking in a mirror, just like Monty.
 
If you catch yourself barking in the mirror of life because you don’t like what you see, there is only one way to alter it, which is by changing the source of the reflection (YOU). Most people attempt to re-configure their reflection via external action – they move across the country, look for a new job, acquire a new relationship, shop for new clothes, or get plastic surgery. Many people don’t realize that genuine and lasting transformation has nothing to do with re-arranging Life on an external level.
 
The quickest way to change your reflection is by learning to truly love and appreciate yourself. Whether you are conscious of the power of your mind or not, the mirror of life is directly related to your self-esteem. It’s not possible to create suffering in your life if you genuinely respect and honor yourself. Even people who are not aware that their thoughts create their reality can and do create truly incredible lives when they love and acknowledge themselves.
 
Until you learn how to love yourself, you are destined to be discontent with the reflection that is your external reality. Unfortunately, you’re not alone in this form of unhappiness. Although most of us can’t really give a good reason for why we’re all so undeserving or unworthy, most of humanity suffers from self-hatred from one degree to another. The only remedy is to become aware of who you truly are, and why you’re on the planet. When you remember the deeper reality that is your true essence, you will grow to love yourself with ease and grace. You’ll also give up barking at the mirror.

Life is a mirror. It will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it. The quickest way to change your reflection is by learning to truly love and appreciate yourself. 

Your life is a mirror

This week I came face to face with a fear that most people have the fear of failure. I wasn’t even aware I had this fear until an idea emerged in me that I felt paralyzed to act upon. This idea may not seem like much to the outside world, but to me, it felt like death. The challenge was… to part with my childhood collection of Jem & the Holograms dolls.

When I first thought of this idea, I actually laughed out loud. There was no way I was giving up my most prized possessions. But at that moment, I knew I had no choice but to part with them because I felt a deep need to dissolve whatever thoughts and emotions were causing me to cling so tightly to them in desperation. As I pulled the dolls out of the back corner of my closet, I had an extremely strong emotional reaction. I sat on the floor and cried for a while, then searched my mind to determine what thought was making me so upset. What I realized at that moment was life-transforming: I realized I was terrified to fail.

What I hadn’t realized all these years is what these dolls represented: my childhood dream of becoming a “rock star”. To let go of my dolls, meant to let go of my dream, which would make me feel like a stupendous failure. How could I ever feel successful with this unrealized ambition in my heart? As a result of this recognition, I began to examine my beliefs about success. What if my conditioned beliefs about success are all wrong? What is a success, anyway?

The answer was presented to me that evening at my weekly Toastmasters meeting. One of my favorite fellow Toastmasters stood up to give his 9th speech, with the goal of inspiring his audience. Mission accomplished. This brave man shared the personal story of his abusive childhood, an experience that left him emotionally scarred and traumatized. As a result, he lived many years immersed in painful shyness, with a debilitating inferiority complex. Eventually, he decided to overcome his suffering by facing his fears and changing his mind. He joined Toastmasters and started volunteering. It was obvious, just by the fact that this man was courageous enough to give a speech (let alone such a personal one), that he had overcome great obstacles on an inner level. At the conclusion of his speech, my friend was given a standing ovation, and I knew I had just had the honor of witnessing true success.

Genuine success comes from within. Success is having the courage to admit to all your deepest fears, and face them. Success is taking the time to dissolve old negative beliefs and thought patterns that aren’t serving you and replace them with the truth. Success is having the audacity to ignore all influence from the outside world and stand up for what’s true for you. The highest measure of success is a measurement of your shift in consciousness.

The beautiful thing about transforming yourself from the inside out is that in time, your external life will begin to mirror the changes that have occurred in your mind. Success, just like everything else, is a vibration of energy. When you begin to feel successful on the inside, the outside conditions of your life will reflect your feelings back to you. To create a successful vibration, begin by facing any fear of failure and then simply start recognizing yourself as successful. You do this by focusing on any accomplishments that make you feel successful, no matter how big or small. Did I manage to part with my dolls? Yes. I gave them to a stranger I met earlier that day while waiting in line at the post office, who by judging from her shopping cart of packages, I realized was an avid eBayer.

When I went to bed that night I was pleased to discover that I felt very successful. Just like my Toastmaster friend, I too have made it a priority to face my fears and change my mind. “Before you come to any conclusions, try walking in my shoes.”

It’s easy to point the finger, become offended, or fly off the handle when you feel hurt by another person, especially when everyone around you says you’re justified in doing so. But next time steam begins to build behind your ears, take a deep breath, close your eyes, and just for a moment, try “walking in their shoes.”

Momentarily placing your feet in the “shoes” of another person will generate compassion for their point of view. You don’t have to agree with their opinion or actions, but it will give you a new level of understanding as to why it is they think, do, or say whatever it is they do.

A good example of this is the classic, “bad childhood”. If your parents gave you a rough ride, join the club. But before you sink any deeper into victimization, take a moment to think about YOUR parents’ childhood. Is there any relevance between how they were raised and how they treated you?

When you can generate understanding and compassion for those who have mistreated you, you’ll see every relationship in a new light. 

The only reason anyone ever inflicts hurt or judgment upon another person is that they feel hurt and judged themselves. Again, this doesn’t justify their actions, but it might prevent you from perpetuating the never-ending cycle of victimization. A more conscious approach would be to ask yourself, “What is this situation here to teach me?” or “what qualities are seeking to emerge in me as a result of this experience?”

Courage, compassion, wisdom, and patience are just a few of the qualities that arise out of the difficulty; in fact, these qualities can’t be cultivated any other way. But they will only arrive when you decide to learn and grow from your relationships instead of victimizing yourself or blaming the other person.

Yes, there are times when we all wish for an easier ride. But the reality is that an easy, breezy life is not how we grow. Challenges always provide a door that when entered into consciously, will lead us onto the fast track of our own evolution.

If you find yourself in a difficult relationship this week, set an intention to mentally walk in the other person’s shoes. There’s a good chance you’ll stumble in their footsteps.
